In case you are not sure of the title... it's Labor Day. The Backwards Holiday. Every year when it rolls around, I wonder why it is named Labor Day. Since it's a Holiday intended to be just that, a Holiday - I would think a better name may be Relax Day or Lazy Day or Off Day or Sleep in Day, maybe even Do- Nothing Day, something other than Labor Day. After all, we know what Labor means. And many likely be celebrated Labor Day by Laboring.

Labor Day came about because workers felt they were spending too
many hours and days on the job.

In the 1884s, the Ontario Factories Act limited work to 60 hours a week, but many factories did not comply until much later, meaning workers were often working much more than 60 hours.

Manufacturing workers were putting in 70-hour weeks on average. Sixty years later, in 1890, hours of work had dropped, although the average manufacturing worker still toiled in a factory 60 hours a week.

These long working hours caused many union organizers to focus on winning a shorter eight-hour workday. They also focused on getting workers more days off, such as the Labor Day holiday, and reducing the workweek to just six days.

These early organizers clearly won since the most recent data show that the average person working in manufacturing is employed for a bit over 40 hours a week and most people work only five days a week.

Surprisingly, many politicians and business owners were in favor of giving workers more time off. That is because workers who had no free time were not able to spend their wages on traveling, entertainment or dining out.

As the Canadian economy expanded beyond farming and basic manufacturing in the late 1800s and early 1900s, it became important for businesses to find consumers interested in buying the products and services being produced in ever greater amounts. Shortening the work week was one way of turning the working class into the consuming class.

So, to celebrate the month of September and the affection for Laboring, I have a special announcement to make I will be Laboring, but for a very special reason. My team and I are addicted to helping you and those you know buy or sell the place they call home. In fact, it is a race to help as many as possible so we can GIVE more away.

Meet Maxen. Maxen was born with a heart defect and other serious health conditions. He had open-heart surgery at four days old: the first of many. But because someone gives monthly, SickKids is here for Maxen – so he can take part in all his favourite activities, like karate...

Today he’s at home with his family, healthy and thriving. He’s reaching milestones that at one point, his mom Subrina wasn’t sure he’d ever experience. Maxen recently started kindergarten and is a star pupil in his karate class. He is a mature conversationalist and enjoys being in the spotlight. If you’re ever in the same room as Maxen, he’ll make sure you not only know his name but also know that it means “the greatest.”

Why I Support Children’s Miracle Network & SickKids Hospital:

Growing up in Scarborough, whenever my brother Steven or
I needed to go to the hospital, our mom and dad always tried to take us to the Hospital for Sick Children, better known today as SickKids Hospital. Even though there were other hospitals significantly closer to home, our mom always believed there was no better place to provide children’s healthcare than SickKids.

Years later, Steven and his wife had twins, Michael and Stephanie. Unfortunately, both were born with a kidney condition called Hydronephrosis. Our mother’s ardent respect and support for SickKids got passed down to us, so it’s no wonder Steven found a specialist based out of
SickKids to treat the twins. They had to visit the specialist every few months until they were about 10 years old. Stephanie even needed to have surgery to treat the condition. Today, because of the wonderful work of Sick Kids, I am proud to say that Michael and Stephanie are healthy young adults.

When I first joined Re/Max, there was an option to donate to the Children’s Miracle Network (CMN), which raises funds for hospitals throughout the United States and Canada. Your CMN donation stays local and it just so happens that SickKids is our local hospital. SickKids is a collection of hard-working professionals, most making their home right here in the GTA, all coming together for a common cause - to help young people overcome unfortunate health issues that life sometimes throws our way. So for me, it was a no-brainer to start donating a portion of my income to CMN and Sick Kids to help them in their quest to heal young people when they need healing.

My team and I are committed to providing outstanding results for buyers and sellers referred to us by our past clients. I know that SickKids share similar commitments to their patients. Since their services rely on sponsorships and donations, we are happy to contribute and proud to support them.

I encourage you to visit their website at www.SickKids.ca and check out how they are making a difference in the lives of children and their families!

CMN and SickKids, please visit: www.ReferForSickKids.com
